Introducing the Veterans Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Bill

Our Veterans deserve the very best access to mental health care, which is why I am honored to introduce this legislation that helps our bravest citizens. As a member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, I have spent my career fighting to make sure Veterans can get the care they have earned and deserve. In West Virginia, we believe in taking care of those who serve us, and that includes making sure their mental health care is one of our top priorities. I will work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass this legislation.

It is estimated that more than 20 veterans die by suicide every day. Of those, 14 have received no treatment or care from the VA. The Commander John Scott Hannon Veterans Mental Health Care Improvement Act will improve outreach to veterans and their mental health care options. The Commander John Scott Hannon Veterans Mental Health Care Improvement Act is a comprehensive and aggressive approach to connect more veterans with the mental health care they need and earned. This bill seeks to improve VA care by bolstering the VA's mental health workforce and increasing rural or hard-to-reach Veterans' access to VA care. Additionally, this bill supports President Trump’s recent executive order on Veteran suicide by funding alternative treatments from community-based organizations.

The bill is endorsed by a growing number of Veterans and mental health advocates, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), American Veterans (AMVETS), National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Volunteers of America (VOA), American Psychological Association (APA), and American Association of Suicidology.

More than $35 Million Announced for Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation Grants

I am proud to announce that West Virginia will receive more than $35 million for mine reclamation projects which are great investments in our water and lands. Through OSMRE funding, West Virginia has previously completed projects that reclaimed a 17-acre burning refuse in Nicholas County, installed four mine seals, and stream bank protection in Kanawha County, as well as an ongoing project to protect houses from landslides caused by mining in Harrison County. This funding and support have real-life impacts on West Virginians and our communities, and I am glad that West Virginia is receiving the funding we need to reclaim, rebuild and reuse these sites.

Abandoned Mine Land (AML) grants, funded in part by a fee based on coal produced in the United States, help to eliminate dangerous environmental conditions and pollution caused by past coal mining. AML-funded projects have closed dangerous mine shafts, eliminated highwalls, reclaimed unstable slopes, treated acid mine drainage, and restored water supplies damaged by mining.

There will be over 200 employers from across the state, looking to fill over 1,000 vacant positions. Don’t let anything stop you from attending this major hiring event! If you don’t have a resume, we’ll help you; if you’ve never looked for a job, we’ll be there to guide you. This is a free and public event and we hope to see you there. Many thanks to the constituents who stopped by and spoke with Mary Jo. Mr. Richard Skotarski of Hedgesville contacted our office regarding the delay of his requested refund for the 2018 American Eagle Palladium One Ounce Proof Coin that he ordered but was not delivered. Caseworker Gerrie Greene contacted the U.S. Mint for a response. A certificate of non-receipt, as well as a refund for the price of the coin, was soon issued to Mr. Skortarski. Additionally, a U.S. Mint customer service manager contacted him by phone confirming the refund and advised him to contact them with any additional questions.

Crab Orchard Baptist Church Becomes Permanent Position for Mountaineer Food Bank's Veteran Food Distribution

Due to the popularity of the event, traffic congestion became an issue at the Beckley VAMC. The decision was made in partnership with the Mountaineer Food Bank to move the mobile food bank to a new location that would not interfere with healthcare at the Medical Center.

The next distribution will be held on Thursday, March 21 in the Crab Orchard Baptist Church from 10 a.m. until noon. The address is 1501 Robert C Byrd Drive, Crab Orchard, WV 25827.

Attendees will remain in their vehicles and volunteers will walk the line of cars to receive signatures. Attendees will then drive up to the Mountaineer Food Bank truck and collect the appropriate box of food. Visit www.beckley.va.gov for more information.
