Requesting Information on the Decision to Close the CNCS Office in WV

Last week I requested information from Barbara Stewart, CEO of Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), in regards to the Transformation and Sustainability Plan which would consolidate 46 state offices into eight regional offices, effectively closing the CNCS office in West Virginia. If enacted, West Virginia’s Senior Corps and AmeriCorps VISTA programs will be supervised by staffers located in an office in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Encouraging the EPA to Add Minden to the National Priorities List and Grant Access to the EPA's Superfund

Last November, I submitted my comments in support of the EPA’s proposal to add the Shaffer site to the NPL. The damaged and unused equipment stored by the Shaffer Company at the Minden site contained harmful polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), a known carcinogen that was banned in 1979 from the United States. This contamination has had lasting effects on the Minden community that can only be properly addressed once the Shaffer site is added to the NPL. With this designation, the residents of Minden, West Virginia can finally begin to find some relief. Health reports clearly show that Minden residents have a significantly higher rate of cancer than that of other Fayette County residents. They need our help.

Asking the President's Administration to Withdraw New SNAP Rule

Along with a bipartisan group of 46 other Senators, I sent a letter to Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, which raised concerns about the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s proposed rule to make harmful changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and urged Secretary Perdue to withdraw the proposal.

Asking Purdue Pharma to Commit to not Profiting from New Drug that Could Reverse Opioid Overdoses

Last week I sent a letter to Purdue Pharma, manufacturer and marketer of the addictive painkiller OxyContin, in response to a media report concerning the company’s development of a new overdose reversal medication. In the story, Purdue claimed that it was in the process of developing and seeking Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for a version of nalmefene hydrochloride — a more powerful overdose reversal medication than naloxone — on a pro bono basis, to combat opioid overdoses.

Key Federal Resources

More than $2 Million Announced for Rainelle Medical Center

As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I am proud to announce that Rainelle Medical Center will receive $2,092,044 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The center provides primary care services, preventative healthcare, including mammograms for uninsured women, and is the sole provider of treatment for Black Lung Disease in the region.

I am thrilled Rainelle Medical Center will receive this funding so that they can better serve their community, through providing essential medical services to West Virginians and give rural West Virginians access to healthcare. In coal-mining states like ours, it’s important that we have medical centers like Rainelle to make sure our miners suffering from Black Lung and other health issues receive the care they have earned and deserve. As a member of the Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fight for funding for Rainelle Medical Center and health centers like it around the state.
