11th Commonsense Connections

Senator Manchin is pleased to announce that his office will launch its 11th “Commonsense Connections” Week beginning Monday, May 20 and ending Friday, May 24. Representatives from Senator Manchin’s office will make stops across the state, visiting all 55 counties to hear West Virginians’ commonsense priorities and concerns and to offer the Senator’s assistance with federal agencies through casework.

From the Hill to the Mountains

MANCHIN STATEMENT ON VERSO PAPER MILL CLOSURE, IMPACTING MINERAL COUNTY, POTOMAC HIGHLANDS REGION

I am incredibly disappointed by the news that Verso’s paper mill in Luke, Maryland will close this summer, and my heart goes out to the 675 hard-working employees and their families who have been devastated by this news, as well as the many local businesses who work to support the mill.  There are so many West Virginians who work alongside our Maryland neighbors at this plant, and this closure will cost them their jobs and deal a huge blow to the local economy. I spoke with Verso’s CEO Leslie Lederer and Governor Larry Hogan of Maryland right after I heard to see if there was a way to save any of these jobs and unfortunately there is not. They both are committed to working with me and our state to help those losing their jobs find a new job and access resources during this difficult time. I will do everything in my power to help every single worker negatively affected by Verso’s closure, and to attract good-paying jobs in this region.   The workers at this plant are to be commended for their years of dedicated service, and we must all come together to support them and their families.

MANCHIN SECURES NASA ADMINISTRATOR ATTENDANCE AT RENAMING FOR KATHERINE JOHNSON ON JULY 2

In the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science hearing on the FY 2020 budget for NASA, I invited Administrator Jim Bridenstine to join me in West Virginia for the renaming of the Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) Facility in Fairmont to the Katherine Johnson IV&V Facility. In a follow up call, Administrator Bridenstine committed to coming to West Virginia to join me for the renaming ceremony on July 2.

I am so glad to hear that Administrator Bridenstine will be in West Virginia for this historic and important day for Katherine Johnson and the entire state of West Virginia. Katherine Johnson is a national hero that deserves every honor and accolade we can bestow upon her and Administrator Bridenstine’s attendance will be such a great addition.

MANCHIN: SWEETHEART SETTLEMENT WITH MCKESSON SELLS OUT WEST VIRGINIA

This week I released the following statement on West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey and Governor Jim Justice’s horrific and inadequate settlement with McKesson Corporation for flooding West Virginia with opioids and killing thousands of West Virginians.

"It’s no surprise to me that Patrick Morrisey and Jim Justice have allowed this type of thievery and have cut a sweetheart deal with McKesson that sells out West Virginia out of the billions of dollars in damages that our state and our people have endured. This is exactly what I said would happen and is exactly what they denied they were going to settle for in October 2018."
