Celebrating Flag Day this Friday, June 14

Like all West Virginians, I feel such pride every time I see the American Flag. Old Glory is, after all, the most enduring symbol of our country, representing the unity of our people and the cause of liberty and justice for all.  A poem I learned as a child from my Uncle Jimmy said it even better, and it perfectly captures how I feel about the American Flag even now:

It’s only some stripes of red and white. / It’s only some stars on a field of blue. / It’s only a little cotton Flag. / Does it mean anything to you? / Oh yes it does, / For beneath its folds / Our people are safe at land and sea. / It stands for a land where God is still king, / And His truth and His freedoms are free. / So let us love it well / And keep it pure as our banner of liberty.

I am proud to join all West Virginians in displaying the Flag that from the first days of America came to symbolize a “new constellation” of hope and freedom. In doing so, we honor not only our Flag, but also the ideals on which America was founded as well as the generations of Americans who have defended those ideals in battle, always ensuring at the end of the fight “our Flag was still there.” 

MANCHIN URGES EPA ADMINISTRATOR WHEELER TO ADJUST PROPOSED PFAS RESPONSE AND CLEANUP GUIDELINES

As a Ranking Member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee (ENR), I sent a letter to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Andrew Wheeler urging him to adjust the proposed EPA guidelines for addressing groundwater contamination in communities where drinking water supplies have been affected by per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The EPA’s proposed guidance addresses screening levels and preliminary remediation goals, however, the draft recommendations lack guidance for two major issues: holding federal agencies like the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) accountable if their resources caused PFAS pollution and an emergency removal level for groundwater contaminated with PFAS. The link between PFAS exposure and serious health conditions signifies that limiting exposure to and quickly addressing these dangerous drinking water contaminants is crucial.

MANCHIN INTRODUCES THREE BIPARTISAN BILLS TO HONOR AND AID GOLD STAR FAMILIES

Our Gold Star Families have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our country’s freedoms and for that we are eternally grateful. Even though their loss can never be filled, it is our solemn duty to do everything we can to honor their loved ones and aid Gold Star Families. That’s why I introduced three bills to honor their sacrifice and their loved ones’ service. We can never repay them, but we can make sure that their loved ones are always remembered. As a member of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I will do everything in my power to honor and help these patriotic families.

MANCHIN, ROUNDS INTRODUCE BIPARTISAN BILL TO EXTEND MISSION ACT DEADLINE

Our Veterans deserve quality, affordable, and accessible healthcare, but the VA readiness to implement the MISSION Act access standards ensure just the opposite. VA Secretary Wilkie has testified that the MISSION Act could be the driver of ‘transformation not seen since WWII’ when General Omar Bradley headed the Veterans Administration. However, adopting new access standards prematurely could result in a significant setback in Veterans’ confidence in the VA, much like the rushed implementation of the Choice Act. We should be learning from past mistakes, not repeating them. General George S. Patton, once said ‘A pint of sweat is worth a gallon of blood’. In other words, preparation, planning, and testing saves lives, and this bill gives the VA more time to do just that. When we can’t inform Veterans of the quality of community care, Veterans from rural states like West Virginia will be harmed the most. I hope that my colleagues will join me in passing this legislation to support our Veterans by ensuring their access to quality healthcare.

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE $30K FOR SAFE DRINKING WATER IN SOUTHERN WEST VIRGINIA

Clean water and fresh air for West Virginians has always been a top priority of mine. By protecting our underground water sources, we are able to take steps forward in ensuring that all West Virginians have access to clean drinking water. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fight for funding that ensures the safety of West Virginians and protects our resources.

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE $1.9 MILLION FOR BLACK LUNG CLINICS

West Virginia currently has eighteen Black Lung Clinics and this funding will help these clinics better the lives of individuals who are living with Black Lung. These clinics help our miners and will insure they are provided the treatment and care they have earned and deserve. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fight for funding to help these programs in order to better the health of our miners.

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE OVER $225K FOR IMPROVING WATERSHEDS IN WEST VIRGINIA

The EPA and the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection continue to work together to help clean up watersheds throughout West Virginia. It is important to ensure the health of all of our waterways so that every West Virginian can enjoy all that our great state has to offer. As Ranking Member on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I am proud to help enhance the water quality of our lakes and rivers so that West Virginia stays wild and wonderful.

MANCHIN, CAPITO ANNOUNCE $2.4 MILLION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL REMEDIATION

As Ranking Member on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, one of my key priorities is making sure every West Virginian has clean water to drink and fresh air to breathe. Projects like these that assess and clean up pollution not only give every West Virginian a cleaner environment to live in and enjoy, but also help bring new businesses to our state. I am proud that the EPA is continuing to partner with communities across West Virginia to enhance the beauty and economic vitality of our state.
