The Scouts of America and West Virginia truly make a perfect match – an organization that builds character and promotes the values of hard work and compassion, and a state full of people who live and breathe those same values every day. One of the greatest milestones we achieved when I was West Virginia’s Governor was convincing the Boy Scouts of America of what we already knew – that the ideal place for this world-class facility was in the adventurous terrains and magnificent mountains of West Virginia. To the Scouts and many volunteers who traveled to be here, I hope you enjoy your time in West Virginia at the beautiful Summit Bechtel Reserve.

I also stopped by the Glen Jean Armory this morning, which is serving as the command center for all state, local and federal agencies and military during the Jamboree. It was a pleasure to meet you and learn about the operations behind this outstanding event.

I was proud to be part of the commissioning ceremony last week for the Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS) at Yeager Airport. I led the way in securing more than $13 million in federal funding for this project in 2017, which will ensure safe, quality air service to our state's capital.

Last week, Regional Coordinator Mary Jo Guidi attended the resume writing workshop at West Virginia Northern Community College for Koppers employees and other job seekers in the area. She also attended the Follansbee Job Fair with Pat Ford from the Business Development Corporation of the Northern Panhandle, and Brooke County Commissioner A.J. Thomas. She was available to provide constituents with information and resources that my Senate offices can provide.

Regional Coordinator Keith McIntosh stopped by the Martinsburg VA Medical Center and visited World War II Veteran Alfred Clark.

Keith also delivered my congratulations to Vietnam Veteran Floyd Covey who was recently awarded his high school diploma from Buckhannon Upshur High School. Floyd answered our nation's call before he had a chance to graduate, and with support from the Martinsburg VA staff, his friends, and family, he was able to achieve this long-awaited milestone.

Representative, JoBeth Delawder, read greetings on my behalf at the 76th West Virginia Poultry Festival President's Dinner. Pictured below are the new officers being sworn into the WV Poultry Association, including the new president, Daryl See (top left).

JoBeth also delivered greetings at the dedication of the Captain William H. Denney, Jr. Memorial Bridge in Moorefield. Captain Denney was lost on February 2, 1969, in Vietnam. He served as company commander of Company D, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry of the 199th Infantry Brigade. For his valorous actions, he earned the Distinguished Service Cross and numerous other awards. Once again, I extend my condolences to his loving family.

I am honored to participate once again as the Special Guest Road Captain for the Fifth Annual Ride for Fallen Service Heroes on Saturday, August 17, 2019. This year’s ride benefits the West Virginia National Guard Foundation, the families of Fallen Service Members, and the establishment of a new Gold Star monument in West Virginia.

Every year, this ride is an awe-inspiring tribute, across the beautiful rolling hills of West Virginia, to our nation’s heroes. Our Mountain State is patriotic in the truest sense – West Virginians have answered the call to service more than nearly any other state in the nation. This ride is one way to honor that extraordinary service, and it’s a profound honor to be part of it. We hope to see you there.

The round-trip motorcycle ride will travel from South Charleston to Buffalo, through Nitro and return to the WV National Guard Airbase in Charleston. Ride overview below:

As your U.S. Senator, I am proud to be your voice with government agencies during your time of need. My goal is for me and my staff to provide the best possible customer service for every West Virginian who contacts me needing assistance. While I have no direct jurisdiction in legal or administrative matters of any federal, state, or local agency, I welcome the opportunity to assist you in any way possible and to assure that full consideration is given to your case. See one of our recent success stories below:

Tammy Dunn, of Cannelton, was awarded disability in 2018 for benefits that were backdated until 2014. Social Security claimed she was not eligible for back pay because she receives benefits for her child who has a disability. Tammy contacted our Martinsburg office for assistance with this matter. As a result of Caseworker Angie Walsh's inquiry, Tammy was returned into pay status and will be receiving her back pay award.

Social Security Phone Scam - Learn How to Protect Yourself

Social Security employees do occasionally contact people--generally those who have ongoing business with the agency--by telephone for business purposes. However, Social Security employees will never threaten a person or promise a Social Security benefit approval, or increase, in exchange for information. In those cases, the call is fraudulent and people should not engage with the caller. If a person receives these calls, he or she should report the information to the OIG Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271 or online at https://oig.ssa.gov/report.

To watch a PSA about the scam, click here or visit www.ssa.gov for more information.
