Manchin Mobile Monday

Every Monday, members of my staff are available in easily accessed locations across the state to assist with constituent services and to bring your thoughts and concerns directly back to me. Below are next week's times and locations for Monday, September 9.

MANCHIN SPEAKS WITH VA SECRETARY AND DIRECTOR OF CLARKSBURG VA ABOUT SUSPICIOUS DEATHS

I spoke with Secretary Wilkie and Dr. Snider to make sure that their investigation into these deaths is accurate and thorough. I was also assured by both Secretary Wilkie and Dr. Snider that the person of interest is no longer in any contact with Veterans at the VA facility. These crimes shock the conscience and I’m still appalled they were not only committed but that our Veterans, who have sacrificed so much for our country, were the victims. As a member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee I will do everything in my power to investigate these accusations and get to the bottom of what happened. These families and loved ones deserve answers as soon as possible and I will make sure they get them.

MANCHIN SPEAKS WITH SECRETARY AZAR, APPLAUDS EFFORT TO ADVANCE JESSIE'S LEGACY

I commend Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Azar, the President, and this administration for their efforts to increase access to treatment for those suffering from substance use disorder. It’s long past time that we make these commonsense changes that enjoy broad, bipartisan support, and I will continue to work with Secretary Azar and all stakeholders to make The Legacy Act the law of the land. The Legacy Act is crucial to making sure that our family members and neighbors struggling with substance use disorder don’t have to experience the same senseless and preventable tragedy that Jessica Grubb and her family suffered. By making changes to the existing regulations regarding medical records, we can save thousands of lives. No one should go to the doctor expecting to receive help and instead be thrown back into the nightmare of addiction. We have seen far too many deaths in West Virginia from this epidemic. This bill will help make sure we are fighting back against this problem, not contributing to it.

MANCHIN ANNOUNCES $106 MILLION IN DISASTER AID HAS BEEN RELEASED TO WEST VIRGINIA

’m relieved the Administration finally heeded my calls and released this desperately needed funding to the people of West Virginia and other areas of the country that are still rebuilding and recovering from horrible natural disasters. This funding will allow us to rebuild smarter and stronger and reduce the potential future catastrophic flooding in this area.

Regional Coordinator Mary Jo Guidi attended the fifth annual Dragon Boat Festival at beautiful Heritage Point in Wheeling. Dragon boat racing is a wonderful team activity and a fun-filled way to bring our communities together.

Regional Coordinator Brian Aluise attended the grand opening for Wood County Society Inc. This outstanding group serves to broaden opportunities for all individuals with disabilities, promoting the core values of accessibility, inclusion, abundance, and compassion.

Mr. Cody Church from Bluefield contacted the Senator for assistance in expediting his immigration petition for his fiancé from Moldova. Although the request to expedite processing was denied, after Senior Caseworker Cris Hewett's inquiry with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services the case was approved. The couple can now begin planning their wedding.

Social Security Phone Scam - Learn How to Protect Yourself

Social Security employees do occasionally contact people--generally those who have ongoing business with the agency--by telephone for business purposes. However, Social Security employees will never threaten a person or promise a Social Security benefit approval, or increase, in exchange for information. In those cases, the call is fraudulent and people should not engage with the caller. If a person receives these calls, he or she should report the information to the OIG Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271 or online at https://oig.ssa.gov/report.

Social Security has recently worked with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission to create a new fraud prevention placemat to help you avoid Social Security scams. You can order free copies of the placemat to use at dining venues, or to share with friends and family. The placemat is in English on one side and Spanish on the other side.
