Presented Congressional Gold Medal at "Rosie the Riveter" Ceremony
Senator Collins was honored to assist in the presentation of the Congressional Gold Medal to the "Rosies" of WWII at the “Rosie the Riveter” Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony.
These women, including thousands of Mainers, worked as welders, mechanics, crane operators, and so much more during the war. Senator Collins was delighted that about 30 of these patriotic trailblazers were able to attend the ceremony with their families. She thanked them for their extraordinary service to our country and for forever changing the role of women in the workforce.
Delivered Remarks at Alzheimer's Advocacy Forum
On Monday, Senator Collins delivered remarks and discussed her legislative priorities at the annual Alzheimer’s Impact Movement (AIM) Advocacy Forum in Washington.
More than 1,000 advocates from all 50 states were in attendance, including Mainers who advocate or care for people living with Alzheimer’s disease.
On Tuesday, Senator Collins met with Maine Alzheimer's advocates, including Doug Carney of Yarmouth, Mary Dysart Hartt, and Mike Hartt of Hampden, and listened to their experiences living or caring for someone with Alzheimer’s.
As the founder and co-chair of the Congressional Task Force on Alzheimer’s disease, Senator Collins has been a champion for all those affected by Alzheimer’s. She recently introduced the Building Our Largest Dementia (BOLD) Infrastructure for Alzheimer’s Reauthorization Act, which would reauthorize public health initiatives across the country to combat Alzheimer’s and preserve brain health. Senator Collins also secured a $100 million increase for Alzheimer’s research in the FY2024 appropriations law.
Criticized USPS Decision to Consolidate Maine Processing Facilities
Senator Collins criticized the United States Postal Service's (USPS) decision to convert the Eastern Maine plant in Hampden to a Local Processing Center. This decision would move outgoing mail processing to Scarborough.
This misguided decision, which Senator Collins repeatedly urged the USPS to reject, jeopardizes the reliable delivery of mail, including critical medication, for Mainers. In addition, many residents will certainly see their local mail delayed.
Senator Collins is working to put together a coalition of Senators from other states who are being similarly affected to write to the Postal Service and object to this proposal.
Senator Collins was interviewed about the decision this week by WGME and WVII.

Called on Administration to Fix CBP Staffing Issues Threatening Eastport’s Tourism Season
Photo: Cruise Maine
During an Appropriations Committee hearing last week, Vice Chair Collins called on Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas to help find a solution to staffing issues found at Maine’s ports that are jeopardizing the arrival of international cruise ships in Eastport this fall.
This comes after U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials informed the City of Eastport that the agency cannot accommodate the four planned international cruise ship arrivals this fall, even though CBP staffed a larger number of international cruise ship arrivals in Eastport last year, and Bar Harbor anticipates a reduction in international cruise ship arrivals.
