The sad fact is that many places in West Virginia simply do not have access to reliable broadband and the lack of access affects West Virginians every day. Back in 2015, the FCC released a coverage map that stated 99.9% of Americans had wireless coverage. I knew then what I know now: That is just plain wrong.

That’s why I’m asking all West Virginians to submit your internet speed-tests, so we can prove to the FCC that our broadband coverage is well below the stated coverage. So far, your efforts have helped the FCC acknowledge that our providers are overstating their coverage, but we must continue to show where and how widespread the lack of broadband coverage is in West Virginia.

U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced $1,190,000 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for food supply chain testing and animal feed regulation through the West Virginia Department of Agriculture.

Manchin: Governor's Broadband Funding Announcement Is Misleading

U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) released the following statement on Governor Justice’s briefing claiming West Virginia would be receiving $766 million in federal funding to expand broadband in West Virginia.

“West Virginia is not getting $766 million in federal funds through the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund just because the Governor signed an Executive Order saying he wants it to happen. Unfortunately, as of the most recent FCC report on September 1st, there isn’t even a single Internet Service Provider in the state that’s eligible to bid on this funding right now.

“For years I’ve been asking the FCC to fix their coverage maps, which show that 98% of West Virginians have access to adequate broadband. We know their maps are wrong and more than 1,500 West Virginians have submitted speed tests that prove it. We know West Virginians will get left behind if the FCC doesn’t update their maps before putting this money out the door. Instead of the Governor making hollow promises, as a U.S. Senator, I’m going to continue my work to secure federal funding for rural broadband and ensure West Virginia doesn’t get left behind.”

Manchin Opposes Beck Nomination To Consumer Product Safety Commission

“During her time with the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr. Beck worked to undermine essential regulations for toxic Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS). Many West Virginians in Parkersburg, Vienna, and Martinsburg know all too well how dangerous these materials can be. Due to her work at the EPA undermining PFAS regulations I cannot support Dr. Beck’s nomination. She has not shown me that she puts the needs of West Virginian and American consumers first, and I urge the Administration to quickly put forward a qualified nominee to fill this important position in a timely fashion.”

WV STRONG

Today’s Better Angels are the congregants and volunteers within the St. James the Greater Catholic Church in Charles Town. In the early days of the pandemic when businesses began to shut down, a group from the church began routinely calling senior citizens in their community asking if there was anything they needed so they could remain quarantined. Groups within this special church have performed many acts of kindness, including food distribution on Mother’s Day, free milk distribution, and in working with “Our Shared Plate,” an initiative that works to provide grocery store gift cards to those in need.

Where can I get a test? This is a question my office has received since the beginning of this pandemic. Please note that this is not a comprehensive list; there may be more testing sites out there that are added daily. In order to provide as much reliable information as possible, I am including testing sites that are verified through an official communication or news release.

For any organizations or health care organizations who would like their site listed, or who have updates on their hours or requirements, please email me at common_sense@manchin.senate.gov .

It is recommended that you seek testing only when you begin exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19. Click here to view the screening criteria. To report your symptoms and be directed to one of the available testing sites, contact your primary care doctor or a designated hotline for your area. Most, if not all, sites require a physician's order before testing.
