Good afternoon -

Our national debt has skyrocketed to more than $19 trillion; enough is enough! I pledged to you that I would work tirelessly to make Washington squeal, which is why every month I give out the Squeal Award to expose and work to eliminate the culture of waste, fraud and abuse.

Squeal Award: VA Employee Bonuses

A recent report revealed that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) awarded more than $177 million in bonuses to nearly 189,000 employees in Fiscal Year 2015, including more than $3.3 million in bonuses to 300 senior executives. Shockingly, according to the report, "More than half the agency’s employees received a bonus, again raising concerns about the performance review process used to evaluate workers."

It is unacceptable that VA employees are receiving lavish bonuses while our veterans are still not receiving the timely and quality care they were promised.

While wait times for appointments have remained high, the number of employees receiving bonuses has increased by more than 20 percent from 2014. Bonus totals have increased by 24 percent, yet our veterans aren’t receiving higher quality care faster. Until our veterans no longer have to face backlogs for appointments and long wait times to receive assistance, VA executives should not be receiving any cash awards.

Earlier this year I put forward proposals to prohibit bonuses to VA executives until the VA puts forward concrete plans to address the numerous issues that need to be resolved.

Handing out millions in bonuses to VA executives while our veterans are still not receiving the care they deserve, has once again earned the VA this month's Squeal Award.
