This year, Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation,  launched her “Innovation State” initiative, a platform to accelerate innovation, attract investments, create jobs, and make Nevada a leader in developing new technology. The Senator has introduced several bills that would create more opportunities and resources for American cities to become SMART Communities, encourage young women to pursue STEM careers, safely integrate critical Unmanned Aircraft Systems use, maintain America’s competitiveness in artificial intelligence (AI), and expand broadband access to urban and rural Nevada. In March, the Senator joined Axios’ Mike Allen in Washington, D.C. to discuss Nevada’s leadership on the issue of SMART Communities and highlight the innovative work happening throughout the state of Nevada, including by the Nevada DOT and Washoe and Southern Nevada RTCs. Senator Cortez Masto also played an important role in helping the City of Reno and Flirtey, a Reno-based drone delivery startup, be selected in the highly competitive Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Integration Pilot Program. Finally, Senator Cortez Masto took to the Senate floor to defend Net Neutrality and tout its importance to Nevada’s education system and small businesses.

The Senator also held a conversation with a government class from Carlin Combined High School where she talked about her efforts to bring broadband internet access to rural communities and underserved urban areas, as well as her work on behalf of the state and the importance of being engaged in government.
