ON THE ROAD
Hamlin Visit
I was honored to spend time last week delivering meals to West Virginians and talking with seniors during lunch. Taking care of seniors has always been a priority of mine. When I was Governor, I purchased hot and cold food trucks for all 55 counties. For me, this wasn’t a cost or burden, but an investment. In West Virginia, we invest based on your priorities, and my priority has always been to take care of seniors. That's why I introduced the HOME Meals Act recently, which will purchase, customize and repair vehicles that provide meals to senior members of our communities. I look forward to working with my colleagues to pass this legislation and take care of our seniors.
Arctic Trip
As Ranking Member of the Senate Energy Committee, I was proud to join my Senate colleagues on a congressional delegation to the Arctic to learn more about the region, develop the relationship with our Arctic neighbors, learn more about innovative energy and climate technologies, and visit US troops stationed there. Thank you to Senators Murkowski, Cantwell, Barrasso and Whitehouse for joining me on this important trip. Visit my Twitter page to follow the whole journey.
Honoring our Veterans on Memorial Day and Every Day
It was truly an honor to welcome thirty-one West Virginia Veterans and their families to Washington, D.C. as they visited the memorials that have been built to honor their service to this country.
As Americans and West Virginians, Memorial Day gives us all an opportunity to show our gratitude and pay respects to those who have so bravely served and paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation. The patriotism and heroism of the men and women who have served is nothing less than inspiring. West Virginians are no stranger to these sacrifices, with one of the highest Veterans per capita of any state, we know what these men and women have given to protect our freedoms.
On behalf of every West Virginian and American, I want to thank every Veteran, their families, and the Gold Star Families for their immense sacrifice and patriotism. From the bottom of my heart, I deeply appreciate what you have given to this country. You are on my mind, in everything I do. God bless you all and God bless this great country.
Backpack Buddy Program
Case Manager Terri Berkley delivered greetings on my behalf at Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene to recognize the Backpack Buddy Program, where volunteers have delivered more than 10,000 boxes of food during the summer to nearly 2,000 families. She joined Program Director Doug Irwin, Ivin Lee, and Pastor Charles Williams to celebrate the event. For many families, this may be their only source of food while school is out and the free and reduced breakfast and lunch program are not an option.
Mingo County
Regional Coordinator, Ali Mitchell, attended the ground breaking for the water and sewer expansion at the Mingo County Air Transportation Park last week. This project will be vital to the economic development opportunities the Air Transportation Park will bring to Mingo County.
Commonsense Connections Week
Our state offices had yet another successful Commonsense Connections week, hosting meetings in all 55 counties. I appreciate the local business owners and agencies that hosted my staff and allowed for convenient meeting places for the people of our home state. Thank you again to all the West Virginians who stopped by to leave their comments and to seek assistance with a federal agency. While this event occurs every year, remember that every week my office hosts Manchin Mobile Monday in various locations of the state with the same mission to bring your ideas back to Washington and assist you with federal agencies.
